"I had the pleasure of working directly with Madi during his time as a Senior Project Manager at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), and her tremendous abilities never ceased to amaze me. Ms. Hanekom has extensive knowledge, skills and experience in the development field having worked in a development finance institution (DFI) environment focusing mainly on infrastructure development for 17 years in various senior capacities (i.e. Senior Project and Programme Manager and Divisional Manager). She successfully led various multi-disciplinary teams through the full project cycle (from conceptualization - marketing, structuring, due diligence, financial and technical closer) in the assessment and due diligence of all the key areas, including socio-economic, development impact, sustainability, institutional, financial, legal, technical and risk aspects of both multi-billion rand and smaller projects. These projects included project finance deals such as the MozalAluminium Smelter (phase 1 and 2, a major anchor for the Mozambique economy) in Mozambique and the Celtel Cellular Network in Zambia (pioneering the digital technology and bridging the digital divide in Africa), as well as social infrastructure projects, such as the Winterveld Schools and Clinics Programmes, and secondary education and tertiary education projects. Ms. Hanekom also has well-developed communication, planning and organization skills, with a strong aptitude to motivate and train high performance teams and individuals in order to transfer skills and execute strategies and implementation plans effectively. He has high levels of cognitive and emotional capacity and is versatile, adaptable and energetic. Given an opportunity I will not hesitate to work with her again." Mlulami Manjezi, Divisional Executive, Rural Development Partnerships Division, DBSA, February 2013.
"Madi has an outstanding track record in managing project teams to ensure successful outcomes. Madi is the epitome of a solution- and results-orientated professional. Despite the many pitfalls and challenges that arise, Madi has demonstrated the ability and determination to bring a number of complex and groundbreaking projects to successful conclusion. Ms Hanekom is a person of unquestioned integrity, outstanding project management capabilities, and a deep understanding of both business, as well as infrastructure finance, the social dimensions of socio-economic development. Her energy and commitment will ensure the successful completion of any task. I have no hesitation in recommending her for any role that requires management, oversight and guidance of any project or process within the sphere of infrastructure finance, project management, human resource development or business development." GNJ White, Acting Chairman: Ithala Limited; Director: Ithala Development Corporation; Director:
Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority, February 2013
"I’ve worked closely with Madi on several projects, and can highly recommend her Project Management and Infrastructure Development expertise for any client looking for an exceptionally hard-working, focused, output-oriented manager to deliver on complex projects. She is single-minded in her pursuit of delivery on time and within budget, and has a vast experience of problem-solving within the public sector. Madi has extensive experience in the field of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), having worked in various capacities over the years: as a financier of infrastructure projects; as a Project officer, as well as in the capacity of Adviser to Government. Over the past 20 years she has gained strong insights into the challenges of infrastructure delivery. Her experience of the Development Finance Institution (DFI) environment is an additional asset to anyone who chooses to work with her on addressing development issues in general, and in particular infrastructure challenges, given the critical role that DFIs are playing in dealing with these issues in South Africa. Her expertise is indeed hard to come by, particularly in a market characterized by capacity constraints such as South Africa." Dr Claudia Manning, Managing Director: DAI Johannesburg, February 2013
"I worked with Madi Hanekom on some of the the first PPP/PSI transactions in SA and Southern Africa. I found her to be a focussed project manager, able to obtain best possible contributions from various disciplines in her project team." Jessica Cronje, Relationship Executive, Absa Corporate & Business Bank, February 2010
"I also wish to thank you for the enthusiasm and effort with which you undertook the work during your appointment with NHFC, as well as your proactive suggestions and the high quality of reports submitted." Gerry Holtzhausen, Assistant Executive Manager, National Housing Finance Corporation (NHFC), April 2008
"Ms Hanekom performed exceptionally well in the role as Senior Project Manager and key member of the Private Sector Investment Unit of the Development Bank of Southern Africa. A particular project that demonstrates her capabilities and achivements is the Mozal project, a greenfield 500,000 tonne per annum aluminium smelter located in Mozambique. This very complex project finance transaction with challenging contractual arrangements and involving a large number of parties, resulting in a challenging negotiation process, was recognised as a major project finance achievement by the international financial community. Madi handled her responsibilities exceptionally well and earned the respect of all the parties with whom she interacted." John Barton-Bridges, Manager: Private Sector Investments Unit, Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), September 2001
